Making a renovation to your home comes with a wide range of benefits, but what do you do during the process? Depending on the type of renovation you’re having done and the projected length, you may want to stay in your home while the work is completed. It’s not always possible to stay in your home while there is ongoing construction, which is why discussing that aspect of the process with your contractor is essential. Budgeting a hotel or home rental, or making plans to stay with family must be a part of your planning. If you choose to stay at home, and your contractor agrees that it will be safe, there are a few things you can do to help ensure that the process will be as comfortable as possible.
Keep Dust Contained
Active construction zones are always messy, and there will likely be a lot of dust. With that in mind, you’ll want to take steps to ensure that as little contaminates the rest of your home as possible. Start by turning off and sealing the HVAC and heating elements of your home. If you have floor or ceiling grates, you may want to make a cover of sheet plastic or paper and masking tape. If the HVAC system and grates are open and on, dust from the construction zone will be blown through the rest of your home.
Seal Off Unused Zones
Along with sealing grates and vents, you may find that adding large drapes to doorways can help keep the dust contained. Depending on the setup of your home, you may be able to seal off the construction zone fully.
Prep Your Family
Before you begin construction of any kind, there are a few extra steps you should take. Removing all fragile items, even from areas not under construction, is critical as if there is banging the vibrations could knock down anything delicate. Next, make sure that pets and children are out of the way. Having strangers and loud noises in the home can be upsetting for pets and small children, it may benefit them to stay with friends and family during the process.
