If the thought of ending up in a nursing home is like a living nightmare to you, you’re not alone. More and more people are choosing aging in place over ending up in senior living communities. While senior living certainly has its benefits, for many, there is simply no place like home. If you plan on aging in place, there are some adjustments you will need to make as you age in order to make living in your home safer and easier.
Main Floor Full Bath
If you live in a two-story home, you already have an uphill battle when it comes to aging in place. Having multiple levels can be really difficult to navigate as you get older, making it preferable to have a single-story home. If that’s not an option, however, then it’s important to have necessary spaces added to the main floor of your home if they’re not already available.
One of these amenities is a full bath, so that you have a bathroom that is easy to access with a full bath/shower. This will be especially useful if you have a room that is already being used as a master bedroom, plan to convert a current room, or plan to add one during future renovations. The full bath on the main level can be designed as a master bath in order to make it easier for anyone aging in place to stay on the main level as much as possible.
Curbless Shower
Getting into and out of a shower that isn’t curbless is often easy enough for anyone that able-bodied and not yet elderly. Unfortunately, as we age, it becomes more and more difficult to manage stepping into showers and tubs with raised edges. If an individual ends up requiring a wheelchair, they won’t be able to access these amenities at all. Going curbless doesn’t just add accessibility, it’s also very trendy right now and looks amazing in any bathroom. Choosing to have a custom curbless shower installed could even raise your property value, or make it easierto sell in the future if you ultimately decide aging in place isn’t for you or circumstances change your plans.
Height Adjustments
As you get older, you start to realize that pretty much nothing in a home is at a height that makes it easy for you to access it. Overhead kitchen cupboards, countertops, sinks, and even toilets are all at a height that mainly benefits younger, able-bodied individuals. For aging in place, countertops and sinks need to be lowered, overhead cupboards need to be eliminated, and toilets need to be a little bit taller. All of these small adjustments will make a big impact for anyone that is aging in place. Even though the adjustments themselves are small, these are all major jobs that can take a lot of time and cost a fair amount of money to complete.
