If you plan to remodel your kitchen, it can be a lot of work, even just to get through the designing and planning phase. Your kitchen is the backbone of your home, and it needs to be both beautiful and functional. Creating a kitchen design wishlist can help you organize your thoughts and get through the design process a bit more easily.
Functionality
When you’re developing your kitchen wishlist, don’t focus only on physical items. You can start with vague plans and ideas that will eventually develop into a more tangible list, often with the help of your contractor and/or an interior designer.
Functionality is one of the first things you should consider. Think about how your kitchen gets used, who is using it, what kind of storage you’ll need, and if there are any additions you’re interested in adding to make your time in the kitchen smoother.
Design Style
Another intangible item on your wishlist should focus on your kitchen’s design style. This includes farmhouse style, contemporary style, modern style, and others. Knowing what your preferred style is can help you determine a lot of the other factors that will go into your kitchen design. For instance, what your aesthetic will be, what kind of appliances you should choose for the right look, and which colors suit the style the most. A farmhouse style kitchen will sport gentle blues and greens in many cases, while a modern style kitchen may be black and white, or even utilize very deep or bold colors.
If you’re not sure which style is best for you, social media and various home design websites have you covered. Google your options, look through these sites for ideas, dig a little deeper into each style you come across (especially ones you’re interested in), and find a way to store images and take notes. This can be really handy when you present this information to your contractor or an interior designer that can help you find exactly what you need to achieve the style you’re aiming for.
Color Scheme
In many cases, color scheme will be at least partially determined by the design style you choose for your kitchen. However, you do not have to stick to what’s “typical” in order to create a beautiful space. Experiment with other options that you’re interested in. For instance, while most farmhouse kitchens are done in blues, greens, and maybe even gentle yellows, there is no reason to hold yourself to these colors if they don’t suit your taste. Branch out and explore light pink, lavender, or go for something more neutral and natural. This is true for any design style.
Appliances
Nearly all appliances are stainless steel these days, which works well in modern and contemporary kitchen designs. However, these aren’t the best choice for everyone. Don’t feel tied down just because more unique options are a little harder to find. Remember that this is your home, and you need to live in it, so if you have your heart set on something different that blends into your kitchen design more readily, don’t hesitate to go looking for it.
Be sure to think about any special appliances you want in your kitchen design so that they can be added to your wishlist and accounted for during the final phases of the design process.
