6 Kitchen Island Considerations

6 Kitchen Island Considerations

Here’s how to design a unique kitchen island that’s absolutely perfect for your home.

Are you planning a kitchen remodel for 2019 or 2020? If so, it’s time to start thinking about the essential aspects of the design. The kitchen is the heart of the home, and the island is its centerpiece. Discover how to select the best island for your kitchen with the following tips!

Assess the Flow of Traffic

Your kitchen island shouldn’t impede the flow of traffic. Instead, it should work with the space to create balance and functionality. Before you choose the size and shape of your island, assess the general flow of traffic, and figure out what would work and what wouldn’t.

Plan for Seating

Modern kitchen islands also function as informal dining spaces for family and guests. Plan for adequate legroom, ensuring that there is a clearance of ten to twelve inches between the knees and the counter.

Work with Your Needs

Kitchen islands are most beneficial when they serve the specific needs of the homeowner. For example, if you like to prepare large meals, you may require an island with plenty of surface area. Do you require extra storage? The island could serve as a workstation and a separate storage unit.

Think Outside of the Box

Kitchen islands don’t have to fit in the traditional rectangle box. Consider an L-shaped island or T-shaped island! These island shapes are best suited for large kitchens, and can easily add functionality to the room.

Pick the Best Location

Islands are typically located in the center of the room, but the ideal location may differ for your kitchen. If your island is designed for a particular purpose, it’s best to locate it where it may best serve that purpose. For example, if you’re planning an island to help with cleanup, it should be located near the dishwasher or garbage.

Consider the Work Triangle

The kitchen work triangle helps to improve the functionality of your kitchen. By connecting the cooktop, sink, and refrigerator in a triangle shape, homeowners can design beautiful and functional kitchens. The island serves as the cooktop portion of the triangle, so it’s important to incorporate it with the sink and refrigerator.
