When you realize it’s time for a kitchen remodel, it’s easy to become overwhelmed by how much planning you need to do before you can even get started. It’s a daunting task, but if you take each step carefully and thoroughly, you’ll be ready for your new kitchen remodel before you know it.
Layout
Determining the layout of your kitchen remodel will probably be one of the first things on your to-do list. Once you’ve chosen a layout, you can work all of your next decisions into the layout plan so that everything comes together nicely.
For some, keeping the same layout will be the best choice. For those who are looking for a new layout, it’s important to “shop around” and figure out what you like best. Visit showrooms, and look through online photo galleries and videos to get an idea of what is currently trending. When you’re searching online, you can save photos and videos to show your contractor and discuss what you like, what you don’t like, and how you want your layout to look.
Appliances
Once you have an idea of your layout, you need to choose appliances. This may seem like a task that can wait until later, but it should be done as early as possible. While many appliances will come in standardized sizes, this isn’t true for all appliances. In addition, each appliance will have its own clearance requirements. If you want an 8-burner stove, for instance, the space and clearance needed will be different than a standard 4-burner stove. Refrigerators also tend to come in varying sizes, so choosing sooner will ensure that your contractor is able to leave enough space for all of your appliances. At a minimum, you should choose a:
- Refrigerator
- Stove
- Microwave
- Dishwasher
If you’re adding any extra appliances, make sure to choose those in advance as well.
Materials
Nest on the list is determining what kind of materials you plan to use. This includes what kind of flooring you’d like to have, what kind of wood you want the cabinets to be, and what materials you’d like your countertops to be made from. Material choices are important because they can greatly affect your budget. The difference in cost between a fabricated stone countertop and a granite countertop will be significant, so it’s important to know what materials you want and how much they cost. To be safe, have a secondary option chosen just in case the one you originally chose ends up being outside of your price range.
Colors
Once we have the layout, appliances, and materials chosen, it’s time to decide on your color scheme. One of the ways to make this easier is by knowing what style you plan to remodel your kitchen in. A modern kitchen remodel is going to look best with more neutral or darker colors, while a farmhouse kitchen will shine with colors that are more bright and vibrant.
Storage
This is of crucial importance—a kitchen with inadequate storage is a nightmare. There are so many things that need to be stored in a kitchen, and your kitchen design needs to ensure that there is room for everything you already have, with plenty of extra space for anything else that comes along. Seek out smart storage solutions that will enhance the usability of your kitchen and make your life easier.
