3 of the Most Common Remodel Setbacks

Bowen Remodeling & Design Remodel Setbacks

It’s a good idea to have some common issues investigated before starting your remodel to avoid a setback.

Remodels can be as stressful as they are exciting. This is especially true if your remodel runs into a hiccup. These can range from a minor inconvenience to a full-blown problem that almost becomes a second remodel. These don’t just set back your timeline, they also add a significant expense that can eat into your budget. One of the best things to do is have your home checked for these common remodel setbacks before you get started.

Water Damage

Easily one of the most common—and often most severe—remodel setbacks is water damage. Homes are susceptible to leaks, many of which can be stealthy and go undetected for long periods of time. The water damage could be coming from a leak in the roof, which will require a roofer to fix. It could also be a busted pipe, which will have to be repaired by a professional plumber. Wherever the leak is, it’ll need to be repaired along with any water damage. There might also be mold and mildew present because of the presence of the water, requiring a specialist to clean it out before remodels can resume.

Outdated Building Work

Building codes are constantly changing and evolving to reflect better stability and safety practices. These codes are important for making sure our homes and businesses are safe to occupy, and sturdy even in extreme weather. If your home is not up to code, remodels will be stalled until any issues are fixed. Some outdated building work will include hazardous materials such as lead and asbestos, which will need to be cleaned out and disposed of by a professional team according to strict laws and regulations. If you live in an older building, it’s a good idea to have a professional out to look it over before you begin the remodeling process.

Electrical Damage

Bad or faulty wiring, along with damaged wiring or even old wiring can stall a remodel project. Unfit electrical wiring is a fire and safety hazard, so if this is spotted you’ll need to hire an electrician to repair any issues and ensure that your home is updated and safe. Until the wiring is fixed, no remodels can take place.
