Why Howard County Homeowners Choose Bowen Remodeling and Design?
Howard County homeowners have hired us for bathroom remodels since 1953. Our work in Columbia, Ellicott City, Clarksville, and beyond crosses three generations of the same family business. One in house team handles every project. Our Crofton showroom puts every material option in front of you before any decision gets made. Trust like this is built one bathroom at a time across seven decades.
Every person who touches your Howard County bathroom project works for Bowen Remodeling and Design. Our designers draft the plan. Our project managers run the schedule. Our carpenters, tile setters, plumbers, and electricians build the work. Nothing gets subcontracted to a stranger you never met. You know who is in your home every day and you know who answers when something needs attention.
The Bowen family started this company in 1953 and the third generation runs it today. Joe Bowen leads the team now and protects the standards his father and grandfather built. Over seven decades, we have remodeled bathrooms in Howard County homes for the parents who first hired us and then for their grown children when they bought their own houses. Many Columbia and Ellicott City families have brought us back three or four times for different projects.
Our Crofton showroom gives you something most Howard County contractors cannot match. Cabinet doors hang on the walls so you can open them. Tile samples sit at eye level so you can compare them. Countertop slabs lean against the racks so you can see the veining in natural light. Fixture finishes mount on display boards so you can feel the weight in your hand. The 45-minute drive from Columbia or Ellicott City pays off because you choose your bathroom with real samples, not online photos.
The Maryland Home Improvement Commission verifies our MHIC license number 48957. Our license has stayed current with the state for decades. Our insurance covers your home, our crew, and the work itself on every Howard County project. The Maryland Department of Labor publishes the full record of every licensed contractor in the state, and ours sits in good standing.
The Better Business Bureau holds us at an A+ rating. The National Association of the Remodeling Industry and the National Kitchen and Bath Association both list Bowen Remodeling and Design as a member. Angie’s List gave us the Super Service Award in 2018. Regional and national press has covered our story of marking more than 70 years in Maryland remodeling, with features running on CBS, ABC, Yahoo Finance, MarketWatch, AP News, and more.
The strongest signal of our work is repeat business. A Columbia family hires us for the primary bath, then comes back for the kids’ bathroom two years later. An Ellicott City homeowner refers us to their neighbor on the next street. A Clarksville estate owner brings us back for a kitchen remodel after we finished their master bath. A Glenelg homeowner asks us to do a powder room and a guest bath in the same year. Seven decades of this kind of repeat work is what built our name in Howard County.
Experience remodeling that’s honest, custom, and hassle free, from a trusted Howard County team that treats your house like their own.

Why Howard County Homes Need a Local Bathroom Remodeler
Howard County sits between Baltimore and Washington along the I-95 corridor. The county covers 252 square miles and includes Columbia, Ellicott City, Clarksville, Elkridge, Fulton, Glenelg, Glenwood, Dayton, Jessup, North Laurel, Highland, Marriottsville, West Friendship, and Lisbon. Money magazine has ranked Columbia and Ellicott City among the best places to live in America, and Howard County consistently ranks at the top of Maryland for schools, household income, and quality of life. Homes here range from Columbia townhomes built in the 1970s to historic colonials in Old Ellicott City, estate properties on acreage in Clarksville and Glenelg, and newer construction in River Hill, Maple Lawn, and Turf Valley.
This range of housing matters for your bathroom remodel. A 1970s Columbia townhome often hides original builder grade fixtures, undersized hall baths, and dated tile work behind the walls. An Old Ellicott City colonial may have lath and plaster walls, original cast iron pipes, and floor framing that needs reinforcement before heavy tile or stone goes in. A Clarksville estate home usually has the space and the budget for primary baths with double vanities, soaking tubs, and custom cabinetry. A Maple Lawn or River Hill new build has modern plumbing but standard developer finishes most homeowners want to upgrade.

Our Process from Estimate to Walkthrough
How Bathroom Remodeling in Howard County Works with Bowen
Every Howard County bathroom remodel we complete follows the same three phase path. One in house team carries the project from the first phone call to the final walkthrough. No handoffs to outside contractors. No confusion about who is doing what or when the next step happens. You know where the project stands from day one through the day you start using the new room.
Free In Home Estimate and Showroom Design Consultation
The work starts with a friendly consultation at your Howard County home. Our team drives out to Columbia, Ellicott City, Clarksville, or wherever you live, measures the existing bathroom, checks the plumbing and electrical access, and talks through what you want the new space to do. No sales pressure. No rushed pitch. Just an honest conversation about your project. Then you visit our Crofton showroom to sit down with one of our in house designers. We walk you through cabinet door samples, tile boards, countertop slabs, vanity options, and fixture finishes. Your designer builds layout drawings and material lists that fit your home, your goals, and your budget.
Final Plan, Permits, and Project Schedule
You receive a finalized design, a complete material order list, and a week by week project schedule before any construction starts. The schedule lays out demolition dates, rough work dates, inspection windows, and finish phases. Our team files for Howard County permits when your project requires them and submits for Columbia Association architectural review when your home falls under CA covenants. You start the project knowing exactly what is happening, who is in your home, and when each phase wraps up.
Demolition, Build, and Final Walkthrough
Our in house crew handles every phase of construction in your Howard County home. We start with controlled demolition, then move through rough plumbing, rough electrical, and Howard County inspections before any walls close. Once rough work passes, our team installs cement board, waterproof membrane, tile, drywall, cabinetry, countertops, and fixtures. We finish with a full walkthrough where you test every fixture, check every surface, and tell us what needs attention. We complete punch list items quickly so you can start using your new bathroom the way it was designed.
Common Howard County Housing Types and Our Approach
Bathroom Remodels for Every Howard County Home Style
Howard County is not one type of home. The county includes 1970s Columbia townhomes, mid century split levels in Elkridge, historic colonials in Old Ellicott City, estate properties on acreage in Clarksville and Glenelg, and new construction in Maple Lawn, River Hill, and Turf Valley. Each home style calls for its own bathroom design approach and brings its own remodel challenges. Our in house designers and crews have worked across every one of them, matching the bathroom design to the home it sits inside. For local details, see our page on Ellicott City bathroom remodeling.

Frequently Asked Questions
About Bathroom Remodeling in Howard County MD
We specialize in making bathroom remodeling in Howard County MD smooth, easy, and satisfying, from the initial consultation to the final installation. Here’s what you need to know:
How We Build Every Howard County Bathroom to Last
The bathroom that fails three years after the install is the one nobody saw being built. Hidden inside the wall, behind the tile, under the floor. That kind of failure traces back to construction shortcuts taken during the build. Our standards in Howard County run the other direction. Every layer behind the finish has to do its job before any finish gets installed.
Waterproofing and Wet Zone Construction
Think of the shower wall in a Columbia primary bath as a five layer system. Studs and framing form the structure. Cement board screws into the studs. Waterproof membrane covers the cement board before tile sets. Tile and grout finish the visible surface. Caulk seals the joints where surfaces meet. Each layer matters. Skip one and water finds its way to the framing within months. Our crew installs every layer in sequence on every Howard County shower we build, with proper flashing at corners and proper sealing around valves, drains, and trim plates.
Mold and Moisture Protection
Howard County summers run humid for months at a time. A primary bath used by two adults every morning generates serious moisture, and that moisture has to go somewhere. If the bathroom does not vent properly, the moisture stays in the air, settles on the walls, soaks into the drywall, and eventually grows mold inside the cavity. Our build prevents this. Exhaust fans get sized to the bathroom square footage with the right CFM rating. Each fan vents directly through an exterior wall or up through a roof cap, never into the attic. Mold resistant drywall hangs everywhere outside the wet zones. Moisture barriers roll out under new tile. The bathroom we leave you with handles Howard County humidity without trapping it.
Plumbing and Electrical Upgrades
A 1972 Columbia townhome with original galvanized supply lines is a different project than a 2018 Maple Lawn new build. Older Howard County homes often need real plumbing work before any tile goes up. Our team replaces galvanized supply with PEX or copper, swaps original cast iron drain lines for modern materials when needed, and adds shutoff valves at every fixture so future repairs do not require shutting off the whole house. The electrical work follows the same logic. GFCI protection at every outlet within six feet of water. Dedicated circuits for lighted mirrors and high draw fixtures. Proper lighting circuits separated from outlet circuits. Every change passes a Howard County inspector before the walls close back up.
Howard County Permits and Inspections
Permits are not optional. The Howard County Department of Inspections, Licenses, and Permits requires them for any bathroom remodel that touches plumbing, electrical, or layout. Skip the permit and you create a problem that follows the house at resale. We file every permit application for your project, post the permit at your home where the inspector can see it, and schedule each inspection at the right moment in the build. Rough plumbing inspection. Rough electrical inspection. Final inspection.
Homes inside Columbia Association covenant communities carry an extra layer. The CA architectural review applies to certain changes even when they are interior, and our team handles the CA submission alongside the county permit work. You receive copies of every approval. You never sit on hold with the permit office. You never chase paperwork. Verify our MHIC license number 48957 directly through the Maryland Home Improvement Commission, and check Howard County permit requirements through the Howard County government website.
